Venues
The first Edward Carpenter Community events took place at Laurieston Hall. Over the years, we have found other venues that have allowed us to offer our members a wider variety of places to come together.
Laurieston Hall is located in Dumfries and Galloway in South West Scotland. It has very large private grounds and is run by a resident community. We are looked after by members of the resident community. We help with cooking and washing up. There are around 65 beds. Events at Laurieston have between 30 and 65 men.
Grasmere Butharlyp Howe is a comfortable and well-appointed youth hostel, fully catered for with vegetarian food by welcoming and friendly staff. The building normally accommodates 80 in dormitories of various sizes but the we will have a maximum of 50 men, so there will be lots of space. Grasmere is a delightful village near Ambleside, easily accessible, ideally situated for the peaks and valleys of the Lake District.
Wasdale is located on Wastwater in the Lake District. It is a youth hostel which we take over completely. We are looked after by YHA staff who cook, wash up and clean for us. It has around 60 bunk style beds. Events at Wasdale usually have up to 33 men.
Whaley Hall is in a sunny spot overlooking the town of Whaley Bridge in the High Peak area of Derbyshire, and has panoramic views towards the Peak District hills. This Victorian mansion house is now run as a community – The Community of the King of Love, no less! It is a peaceful, warm, cosy and gay-friendly environment, which we will have exclusive use of. Food is vegetarian, and fully catered. There are limited disabled access facilities – please check your requirements with the organisers.
